1/144 HG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. G30th

This is Amuro Ray... the RX-78-2 Gundam, a special HGUC model redesigned by Bandai in conjunction with the 30th Anniversary of Gundam (the anime first appear on Japan TV in 1979).

The price is 1,200 yen and according to Bandai, this is a limited production run... so maybe this item will be made available in 1 or 2 months only or while stock last and after that Bandai wont produce them anymore... I think that is why the reason I bought more than 1...

Nonetheless, lot's of photos in this post - maybe almost 100, sorry for that, if your internet connection is quite slow, it might take forever to load the page...

In case that you don't know, so far this RX-78-2 Gundam is the best selling Gundam ever... from HG 1/144 to MG 1/100, I think almost all of the hardcore Gundam collectors would want to have at least 1 of this "grandpa" Gundam...

This small booklet contains information about RX-78-2 Gundam and other GunPla...

The GunPla evolution of RX-78-2

Also some tips on how to play action pose...

I think this is how they post the big size Gundam currently on display in Odaiba, Japan.

OK then, as always, let's have a look at the body...

This kit is basically based on the 1/1-scale Gundam statue built for the Green Tokyo Gundam Project in Japan! The kit sports more panel lines throughout, newly designed sub-nozzles underneath its backpack, and sharp details on its knee joints. Included are its standard weapon load outs consisting of a Beam Rifle, a Beam Saber, a Hyper Bazooka, a Gundam Hammer, and a shield.

As you can see from the photos, I think I over doing the panel lining stuff... it was fun actually but also time consuming... I'm just a beginner anyway so there is a lot of mess around the body... I just use pencil though and not Gundam marker... Lucky for me, I have extra of this kit so the other unit, I wont do any stupid panel lining work except for the face part.

OK, quickly now to action pose and articulation...

I know it's not relevant or fair at all but for fun sake I did try to compare the articulation level of the 78 and the 00.

This is as much as the arms could go...

00 obviously have longer legs than the 78.

Overall, posing and articulation wise, the 78 cannot compete with the 00 but then again it is not relevant and fair to make such direct comparison. After all the other reason for that is because the overall mecha design on the 78 can't really permit such articulation level but somehow for what is worth, 78 can still do a lot of posing and slightly better articulation than the previous normal HGUC version (issued in 2001) and I am basically happy with what he can do now.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
OK, let's take a break for a while... some commercial break maybe... hahahaha

Yeah, they are trying to copy this pose actually... Shewsbury Land is proudly introduce this Intimate Pigs with "batik" design on their body...

This is one of the souvenir I got for my self in Jakarta airport last time...

They look so lovely and so cute... with the touch of art on them...

The eye expression obviously telling us that they're having such a great time together...

So far these all are my pig collections... in the future, if I find any interesting pig, I will surely pick them up...

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
OK, enough of that commercial break... now let's go back to the Gundam...

More posing...

By the way these are all the weapons that come with this kit;

The standard beam rifle and shield, 2 beam saber handles mounted at the back of Gundam, a bazooka, that Gundam hammer and a "tooth pick" type of beam saber which originally come in pure white color and then later I paint it with red (using just normal permanent marker pen) to make it look like a beam saber... I'm pretty disappointed that Bandai did not provide the normal beam saber part for this so called special item.

This is the shield... as you can see, it has nice panel lining...

This is the back part... don't bother about that sticker... it's another habit of mine lately to stick something on the shield...

They design a nice "attachment" system for this shield, something that I thought would be nice for my 1/100 MG RX-78 Gundam CA to have...

See that thing;

You can use it to mount the shield at the back...

And then to attached it onto the arm, just press it down and something else will appear and you can use that to attached the shield on the left arm of the Gundam.

Just like this...

Oh yeah, the arm/hand can't really reach to the beam saber mounted at the back... I've tried and this is all I can get...

Nonetheless.. it's beam saber time...

The bazooka is one the only weapon for 78 that I don't really fancy so much coz after all it's quite challenging to attached it on him... so not much posing and photo from me on this one....

And this is the Gundam hammer, I don't remember seeing this in the anime but I think it's cool weapon and Bandai give a nice chain for this just HG kit.

In my imagination, I think this is how he use this Gundam hammer...

Side by side with the GFF RX-78 Gundam designed by Katoki Hajime.

Again it's not fair and relevant to compare them directly but basically you can spot some differences on design between them.

And I think without me marking anything, you can see another differences on the ankle part (the rear side).

OK, lastly some outdoor photos;

I do feel annoyed with the beam saber handles easily fall down from the back of this 78 and also the side armor skirt also can fall down sometimes specially during the time when you adjusting the legs for posing but that is not as bad as the beam saber handle problem. The lack of beam saber parts also disappoint me but I think the excellent shield design and the nice Gundam hammer can make me forget that. Other than this, I think this kit is quite OK and if you are also a Gundam collectors, get this one coz this is the "grandpa" Gundam. Nothing great if you compared to the more modern Gundam like maybe Strike, Freedom, Strike Freedom, Exia or 00 Gundam but this 78 have a lot of sentimental and nostalgic value for Gundam anime and GunPla and BANDAI....

We knew Bandai already released the 1/100 MG RX-78-2 Gundam Version 2.0 but out of the blue, I wonder if they will produce another special design of 1/100 MG RX-78-2 for this special anniversary edition.

And then, I also wonder if they will produce a special HGUC 1/144 for Char Aznable's Zaku II and Ramba Ral's Gouf and maybe also the Gyan of Mqueve. I would love to get them...

The 00 Gundam however, already found a temporary "parking space" on my Gundam Gallery but a major reorganization of the "parking space" will be done this weekend and also major "cleaning services" - I can see the dust is getting more and more visible... damn I hate that...

Shewsbury Land Freebies V5 is coming soon...
